As a person you can’t be good at everything at once and this applies to being a mathematician too. I would emphasise nailing the absolute fundamental skills, such as being having a good understanding of number theory. But more importantly, you need to be able to think analytically about your work and never assuming anything or taking any knowledge for granted. Mathematicians are always asking themselves “Why?” or “Can I prove this?” when dealing with a problem. As long as you are comfortable always questioning yourself and being questioned then you will do well, and don’t be afraid to have your work questioned, as that’s how you will improve over time. There’s a reason why mathematicians work on problems for years, and not just from 9-5.
