About Me:
I’m a mathematician working in the medicine department in Oxford ➕. I like reading, puzzles, cricket, learning languages and spending time with my friends 💜.

I’m from Australia and moved to the UK to do a PhD in maths (I’m now a doctor!). During my PhD, aside from my research I was also involved in a number of projects where we wrote biographies and recorded videos to show people how cool and diverse we could be – check them out here https://www.seresearch.qmul.ac.uk/pce/ediresources/ and here https://www.qmul.ac.uk/maths/our-community/equality-diversity-and-inclusion/a-mathematician-like-me/.
I have had a lot of hobbies which change when I get bored. For example, I used to be really into roller skating, knitting and crochet, and playing Legend of Zelda on my Switch. During my PhD I also learned how to speak German and now want to learn Spanish and other languages!

How I use Maths in my work:
I’m a mathematician, so all of my work is maths! In my current job, I do a lot of data analysis and statistics on medical images and I also research new mathematical tools we can use for this.
-
My Work:
I use shapes to represent data and then use maths on these shapes to analyse this data. Currently I do this with medical images, but these tools can be used on many other things!

I do something called “topological data analysis”. The “topological” means that I use abstract shapes to represent “data” points and then use mathematical tools to measure and “analyse” these shapes and say something about the data.
In my PhD, I used extremely weird and abstract mathematical structures to work out whether “holes” in shapes like crystals were real or not. In my current work, I take pictures of medical data, and find different tools to describe how different cells are behaving, interacting and changing.

My Typical Day:
I don’t really have a typical day! In the morning I ride my bike into work (or sometimes take the train to work in a biology lab in London!) between 9-11am. During the day I do my research on my computer and think about ways to solve the problems I’m facing – but I make sure to take lots of breaks for lunch, coffee, and to talk to other people. I usually leave work between 5-7pm and either go home to cook myself dinner or go out to do some of my hobbies. 🙂

When I’m at work, I’m doing a bunch of different things depending on the day or the week: sometimes I’m writing code to test out some new maths I’m working on, sometimes I’m analysing and interpreting the cool data I get to work with, sometimes I’m reading about the cool new maths other people are doing to see if it’s useful to my work, sometimes I’m writing about my research, sometimes I’m in meetings with my colleagues and supervisor discussing my work or getting to hear about the work they’ve been doing, and sometimes I just go for a walk around to clear my head whenever I’m stuck on a problem!
-
Education:
I went to a few different schools in Australia, then went to university at the Australian National University and then moved to the UK to do a PhD at Queen Mary University of London.
-
Qualifications:
I’m not from the UK, so I don’t have any GCSEs, O levels etc 🙁 but I do have a Bachelors and integrated Masters in Science and a PhD in Mathematics.
-
Work History:
I used to be a delivery driver and manager at Dominos in 2018-2021 before moving to the UK.
During my PhD, I worked as an ambassador at Queen Mary University of London.
-
Current Job:
Postdoctoral researcher in the data analysis of lung and kidney cancers
-
Employer:
Nuffield Department of Medicine at the University of Oxford

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Mathematician who-can't count-to-three
What did you want to be after you left school?
When I was young, I wanted to play rugby or cricket, but by the end of school I wanted to be an astrophysicist.
Were you ever in trouble at school?
I can't remember too well...
If you weren't doing this job, what would you choose instead?
I would love to be a teacher - one of the things that I like most about being a researcher at university is that I also get the opportunity to teach.
Who is your favourite singer or band?
Catfish and the Bottlemen
What's your favourite food?
I love falafel wraps, or any vegan food to be honest
Tell us a joke.
I tried to do something other than maths, but that just didn't add up!
