I am part of a team working on disease surveillance. We analyse data from lab testing and post mortems of farm animals and wildlife, looking for new diseases, ones that haven’t been seen recently and any trends and patterns in diseases. If we know about disease early, we can act to protect both animal and human health.
My work involves analysing this data and creating reports and dashboards to help vets, farmers and government. I also work on early detection outbreak modelling.

Qualifications:
11 GCSEs
A Levels – Philosophy, Media Studies, English
I did not go to university straight from school, and my A level subjects are not related to my current career! I returned to studying later in life and did a very different set of qualifications:
Certificate in Higher Education – Computing
BSc Applied Animal Science
MSc Applied Statistics in Health Sciences
These are directly related to my current role, which means I combine my interests in biology and animal health with my interests in data and technology.
-
Work History:
I have done a million different jobs over the years, starting out in retail, factory and call centre jobs. I moved into some data related roles – a debt management company, one with the NHS in a radiology department, and also with a university marketing department.
This has been very varied and not a straight line at all, but it has all helped lead me to where I am now.
