About Me:
I have 3 cats who are all crazy and unique. I play in a brass band in my spare time and I love to paint. I’m a researcher in maths and computing professionally and I love what I do.

I play percussion in a brass band. That means anything you hit with a stick! We travel and go to different competitions all over the place.
I love painting and drawing and I also do something called pyrography whis is fire writing on wood. It is very fun but you need to be very careful when doing it.
I have travelled all over the world for my work. I’ve been to China for conferences and will be living there for 4 months a year from now on teaching at a University there. I have also been a guest speaker at the University of Tokyo!

How I use Maths in my work:
I use equations to model the movement of fluids. Mainly water but I’ve recently been looking at blood!
-
My Work:
I look at flash floods and how they behave. This helps us put barriers in place to reduce the damage caused by floods in places where people live.
I also look at blood in the body and how it behaves as we age.
And, I research AI. As it becomes more advanced, we can use it as more of a teammate than a tool! -

I research an area of maths called fluid dynamics. This looks at equations that can show the behaviour of water. I use something called the Lattice Boltzmann Method. This looks at every individual particle inside the water and uses lots of fancy complicated physics to predict the movement of every single particle. Then, if you zoom out, all those particles together as a big picture look like water!
I use this to try and model flash floods. This is a very complicated area of fluid dynamics because flash floods are so dangerous and unpredictable and contain a lot of very difficult maths and physics to simulate. I also try and use this method to model the blood inside our bodies to see how it behaves as we age.

My Typical Day:
I get up really early, go to my office, teach classes, do my research by programming in different languages, eat lunch, and go home really late at night

I get up very early, usually right before I have to leave! I run out of the house and get the bus to work. I usually arrive at around 7:30am and grab breakfast from Greggs next door. I eat it in my office and use the time in the morning before 9am to look at my emails, plan what I have to do that day, and finish any prep.
Usually, I teach a few classes so I go to the room 10 minutes before it begins. Sometimes it’s all the way on the other side of campus!
In between classes, I have meetings about research, or about those classes. I mark coursework, respond to emails. I also read and look up research papers, and I do my own research in my office. This involves using a programming language to simulate the equations for water and I wait and see the results. If the results are not good enough, I change small parts of the simulation and run it again.
I have lunch, maybe meet up with colleagues or friends for lunch too.
I usually go home between 6pm and 8pm and play with the cats while I relax and then go to bed.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Crazy maths lady
What did you want to be after you left school?
I wanted to get a PhD and be a researcher
Were you ever in trouble at school?
Not really
If you weren't doing this job, what would you choose instead?
Army intelligence
Who is your favourite singer or band?
Queen
What's your favourite food?
Eggs Benedict
If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!
1: I would have a big house, 2: i would have enough money to travel wherever I want, when I want, 3: I wish that me and my cats could live forever
Tell us a joke.
I dont trust people with graph paper. They're always plotting something
