I make enough to cover all my expenses. I’m able to go on holiday a few times a year, have a pet, afford a car, and I’ve been able to buy my own house too!
I work at the university so my salary is available for anyone to look up online 🙂 A starting salary at a university for people working after they completed a PhD usually starts around a median income in the UK.
It can vary very much on what you decide to do and what sector you decide to work in. Science in general is not seen to be a “big” earner compared with some other career choices. However, it does pay well and as you progress in your career that can continue to increase. I am ~ 20 years out of high school and now at a senior position in the science ladder and earn more that £80k per year.
I’m disabled and only able to work three days a week, so I earn about £26k a year. I would be earning closer to £45k if I could work fulltime+ like most of my colleagues.
