I think the concept of bounds of validity is crucial for any engineering project. That is, any given mathematical model we use to describe the real world will have limits to the situations in which it holds true and can be applied.

In particular, if you’re working with extreme conditions (such as space, nuclear reactors, high temperatures, underwater, etc.) this is going to affect which equations you can apply when engineering a design.

Maybe it’s a poor answer because it’s technically more of an science/engineering concept than a pure mathematical one, sorry about that.

In terms of pure maths, basic geometry comes up pretty much all the time.
