This is a great question. How I explain things depends heavily on who I am talking to and their current knowledge. There is no “one answer fits all” when it comes to explaining maths concepts. Explaining to non-experts is a skill you can learn which takes a lot of practise and creativity.

One step at a time! You start with something the student knows, and build from there. It can look very daunting, but think about how far you yourself have come since you were a baby. You started off not knowing what a number is!
If you have a younger sibling, think about how you would explain what you learned today, to them. You couldn’t teach them like your teacher teaches you; you need to start at their level and scaffold some ideas for them, until they can practice on their own.
